We're having a baby!

Due date is August 4 (I am 10 weeks, 3 days pregnant)! No ultrasound until much later (unless the doctor thinks it's necessary), but hopefully we'll hear the heartbeat when I go in for the second appointment a week from today. We told our families at Christmas and they were all thrilled (first grandchild on both sides, first great-grandchild on my side). We are super excited, too! It certainly doesn't seem to have quite sunk in yet, though. Perhaps it doesn't until the baby is actually born??

We found out just after Christmas that Chad's brother and his wife are also having a baby! She's not quite sure how far along she is, but we suspect we're about 2 weeks apart. It will be so fun to have two cousins born so close!

It is such a joyous thing to anticipate meeting this child that is being formed inside of me. At the same time, I know that many women lose their babies well before they are born and that I am not immune to that possibility. I am so thankful that God's hand is forming my child, and I trust Him to do what is best for us and for him/her. I know that I am not in control, and I am so thankful for the grace that God has given me to be able to stop struggling with Him for it. This child has already been such a blessing to me in helping me to give up fear and to rest in knowing and trusting Jesus.

For all those who want to know the details (please skip if you get grossed out by these types of things):
Yes, I have felt nauseous. Many times, and apparently there's not really any pattern to it, which is annoying to me probably mainly because I like predictability (but likely good training for later). :) I threw up for the week that I had a cold and lots of congestion was draining down my throat, and then I threw up randomly yesterday morning (didn't even feel queasy beforehand). Some days I feel fine pretty much all day long. Some days I can't do anything to quell the nausea except perhaps suck on something citrus-y (the Altoids Citrus Sours have probably kept a lot of food from exiting my digestive system).

I haven't been all that tired, but I have been trying to sleep an extra hour or so each night. I had several days of feeling exhausted right at the beginning. Those days and needing to buy bras 2 sizes bigger by the first day of missed period were my first indicators that, yes, something different was definitely happening in my body.

I bought my first maternity pants yesterday and wore a pair today. I probably own (ie, have accumulated over the years) about 12 pairs of (normal) pants, and currently I can (semi)-comfortably wear 3 of them, one of which I bought a size bigger than normal not that long ago so I would have something comfortable to wear. It's kind of funny to me, though, because I *might* have gained 1 pound so far. I suppose that's the way it works. :) I tried the rubber-band-through-the-button-hole approach for one normal pair, but the button was much farther up than where my pants are tight, so it didn't help much. For all you seasoned veterans, any advice on maternity clothing is much appreciated. It seems Old Navy has some nice, reasonably inexpensive things, but that's about all I've found so far.

Yay! Congratulations :)

Samuel and his cousin Eddie are just over three weeks apart in age. It is fun for them but it's been really fun so far for the mommies. My sister-in-law and I have become really good friends and get to compare notes on lots of things :)

As for maternity clothes, I agree with Amy that it gets much harder if you have to be work presentable. But the one best thing is to put out the word that you are willing to borrow or take hand-me-downs. If just a few people lend you a few items suddenly you have this amazing wardrobe. For me, I looked for and found a few nice on-sale maternity pants from Old Navy (I don't have tall enough friends close by) and otherwise I had bags and bags of nice shirts to choose from.

If you like looking at resale and consignment shops, a lot of places that do baby resale also have a maternity section (the plus being that you get to browse cute baby things when you visit :) )

yay for babies!

Congratulations! It's great that Baby will have a nearby same-aged cousin. Anna has a cousin just 2 months older than her, but the cousin will likely be living in the Middle East most of her life so it won't do Anna much day-to-day good.

I had some old slacks with elastic in the back and used a rubberband. I started wearing maternity shirts early so that the unzipped part wouldn't matter. If you plan not to go back to work, it is wise to buy maternity shirts which you would be willing to wear at home, too. I second Laura about putting the word out that you'll wear hand-me-downs. Not thinking, I mentioned casually that I was planning on going shopping for some maternity t-shirts and a woman overheard and gave me 8 shirts! She is 35 and is done with having kids; told me to pass on anything I didn't want. Also, there exist (shock!) some people who think you need new clothes for every baby.

Yay Michelle! That's wonderful :). Your pregnancy sounds almost exactly like mine so far...right down to the due date! I also experienced similar levels of nausea/vomiting and belly expansion. The only difference is that I was exhausted beyond the beginning.

As for maternity clothes, I found my best stuff at sears (I had to look nice for work). My best purchase was a nice pair of black pants that was expandable (not stretchy). Using zippers and a built in "belt" (not sure what it's called), the pants actually grew with me, fitting right over my belly button. Unfortunately I can't find it on the sears website, but there's a great maternity section in-store, at least where I live. They also have awesome nursing bras. I got some while I was pregnant, and then had to get more once Rachel was born because I expanded EVEN MORE. Didn't think it was possible!

I also got some cute tops at Target (though Target's stuff tends to have issues with unraveling seams. Don't know why.)

By May/June I outgrew most of my maternity clothes, but it didn't matter much because the weather was too hot for them anyway. At that point, school was over and I bought a bunch of huge shorts and shirts from the Goodwill maternity rack for cheap. They served me well through the post-partum period too. I was also loaned some maternity clothes near the end that were helpful.

By the way, Rachel was born on July 19th, which I believe is YOUR anniversary! So don't go planning some big romantic getaway...you may be getting away to the hospital instead!

HOOOOOOORooorrraaayyyyyyy

bella bands work too for some "shapes" of women. supposedly they hold up your pants with the fly open. overalls are good if you can find work-suitable ones.

i totally would cry if i didn't have my ice breakers sours during first trimester. "where are my sour candies?!!" i'd panic.

i was lucky b/c a school is full of birthing women, and i had more maternity clothes to borrow than i'd had regular clothes!! i wore a lot of loose dresses during 1st trimester too.
