Re: Children and Working

Thanks to everyone for your comments! It is really helpful and encouraging to hear your thoughts about yourselves and other moms who stay at home (or don't). I don't know many people in Portland who have small children right now, except for some of my co-workers whose ideas and attitudes I don't necessarily trust to be the best.

What I am thinking right this moment is I would love to stay at home and maybe do something like tutoring or (like Katie) teach an hour a week or something. Of course, there's no baby on the way yet, and there will be much prayer and consideration given, so we will see what happens! I mainly want to make sure that my brain still gets stimulated in the science-y problem-solving type of way, at least moderately every once in a while. (But from what I read on everyone's blogs, the problem-solving part happens at least fifteen times every day!) It's great to hear that there are lots of possibilities for friendships with other moms through groups/organizations/etc.

Hi Michelle!
I was so happy to find your blog! Yay! (Jane does a pirate bunny hop)
My $0.02 on children and working: My brain gets stimulated in a science-y way when I chat with Ari about his research and proofread his papers and sometimes even help him solve a problem - this happens often enough that I know my education wasn't wasted. Plus I plan on homeschooling the munchkins and I'm excited about how much I'll learn doing that! I already, for example, learned that the Nile Crocodile sometimes helps her babies hatch from their eggs by gently cracking them between her teeth, from a book we checked out of the library to read to Petra. Yippee! And watching a little person develop and acquire language is just fascinating to any science-y brain...
:-) I'm glad you're blogging! I'd wondered how you were doing quite often, so it's fun to be able to read your blog. (Jane bounces, which now has the pleasant side effect of making the baby go to sleep).

To second what Jane said...I also have a lot of scientific discussions at the dinner table, and proofread Dan's papers, and can sometimes even offer helpful suggestions! One of Dan's co-workers said to him "You have no idea what you have at home!" Yay for an education not wasted!
